A $1,000 jogging stroller sitting in your garage because it does not fit in your sedan's trunk is not a good purchase. A $200 lightweight stroller you use every single day is. The right stroller depends on how you actually live - not on what looks best on Instagram.

When to Buy Your Stroller

Timing can save you hundreds of dollars. Here are the best times to buy:

• Black Friday and Cyber Monday - The biggest stroller sales of the year. UPPAbaby, BOB, and Nuna all run promotions. Expect 15 to 25% off or bundled accessories.
• Amazon Prime Day (July) - Great deals on Graco, Baby Trend, and other mid-range brands.
• End-of-model-year clearance - When new model years launch (usually spring), the previous year's models get steep discounts. Same stroller, different color, 30% less.
• Registry completion discounts - Target gives 15% off remaining registry items. Amazon gives 15% off. BuyBuyBaby/Bed Bath and Beyond gives 20%. Create a registry even if you plan to buy everything yourself.

The second trimester is ideal for research. You have energy, time to compare, and enough runway to wait for a sale.

What About Used Strollers?

Used strollers can be a great deal, but there are safety considerations that do not apply to other baby gear:

• Check recall lists first - Search the model at CPSC.gov before buying. Some recalled strollers had hinge injuries, brake failures, or structural issues.
• Inspect the frame and wheels - Wobble the frame, test the brakes on a hill, spin each wheel. Bent frames and worn brakes are deal-breakers.
• Check the harness and buckles - Every strap should click firmly and adjust smoothly. Frayed straps mean pass.
• Avoid stroller/car seat combos over 6 years old - Car seats expire, and integrated travel systems age out together. Standalone strollers can last much longer.
• Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist - Great sources for gently used premium strollers at 40 to 60% off retail. UPPAbaby and Nuna hold their value well, so even used prices reflect quality.
